Creator for Gilmore Foundation Could Not Imagine what has Happened 90 Years Later
The Gilmore Foundation was created over 90 years ago to change lives for the better, and today the non-profit, grant-making organization is doing that in ways the founders could never imagine.
/New Hampshire News Articles/ - AMORY, MS, April 21, 2007 -- When the Gilmore family created the Gilmore Foundation over 90 years ago, they could not at that time imagine computers or the Internet, but because of their vision and desire to make life better for the people of northeast Mississippi, an entire city will have free wireless high-speed Internet access.
Ellie Davison Gilmore came to Amory in 1888, and has left a legacy of service to others that continues to touch the lives of everyone who lives, works, or visits this growing city. The Gilmore Foundation, which he created to give back to his community after a successful business career, has provided a grant that will provide the entire community high-speed, wireless Internet access.
"When this foundation was created over 90 years ago, the Gilmore family could not have conceived of computers, or the Internet. But their desire to improve the lives of others by strengthening education, healthcare, and business growth in the community is being realized with the creation of AmoryNet," said Danny Spreitler, executive director of the Gilmore Foundation.
AmoryNet, created by a grant from the Gilmore Foundation, provides free high speed wireless Internet access to empower an entire community, provide access to information technology resources, enable more people to become competitive in education, human development, workforce development, healthcare and economic opportunity.
In addition to AmoryNet, the foundation provides grants to help worthwhile projects that contribute to the goals of the foundation. The Gilmore Foundation maintains a web site with additional information at http://www.GilmoreFoundation.org
"The foundation invests in organizations that provide or strengthen education, health, workforce development or offer other initiatives to improve the quality of life in the area. This is the great legacy left to us by the Gilmore family," said Spreitler.
With the reallocation of its assets from the sale of Gilmore Memorial Hospital, service to the community continues with the recent construction of the new Gilmore Foundation Conference Center, which provides the location for the infrastructure of AmoryNet. The center also provides classroom and meeting facilities to aid and assist individuals, organizations, and businesses of the area.
"From our humble beginnings in 1916, we have never lost sight of the founding tenet left to us by Mr. E. D. Gilmore -'To Benefit Humanity'. Our purpose is to improve the quality of life for all residents of Monroe County, and even though he could not imagine AmoryNet 90 years ago, we know that Mr. Gilmore approves," said Spreitler.
